Improving a business’ IQ: strategies to make business work better through research

“Firms have a good measure of R & D effectiveness, or what I call corporate IQ,” said Anne Marie Knott, associate professor of strategy at the Olin Business School, Washington University in St. Louis. Knott’s business research focuses on how to measure a firm’s IQ and a new National Science Foundation in the hand, she is closer to figuring out what smart companies block.

Knott has a grant from the NSF for a study of the characteristics of companies to identify a highly productive R & D (high IQ) versus those with less productive R & D (low IQ).

During the pilot phase of the study, Knott and PhD student Carl Vieregger will do in-depth interviews with a high IQ and low IQ firms in two industries. Future phases of the study to include interviews to a larger group of companies, followed by a comparison of IQ features a large-scale quantitative study on the size of the companies involved in R & D

“The problem is companies do not know if they are doing a good job with the R & D,” explains Knott. “With the establishment of a scale or way R & D efficiency measure, they can find out how much to spending on R & D and how well they do with the R & D

Knott said most existing studies use patent data R & D efficiency measure, but she said less than 50% of the company involved in R & D actually patent their inventions, so that the measure is not universal. Furthermore, patents have a highly variable value. “5% of patents account for 95% of the value of all patents, yes, it is not uniform Finally, it is not reliable to predict market value ..”

Knott’s purpose for firm IQ is ultimately a tool to help companies determine whether they have the right to fully research and development investments to make profits. Knott IQ predicts that information will provide useful information for the industry, similar to TQM, total quality management. “Once you know your IQ,” says Knott, “you can really start to improve”

Anne Marie Knott’s first career was in engineering. She voted for the Hughes Aircraft and help build the air-to-ground missiles used in the 1991 Operation Desert Storm in Kuwait when Iraq.
