4 Ways for Project Managers to Build Stronger People Skills

It’s been said many times that people skills are most important for professional success. However, we see a big emphasis on “tools”, whether in project management frameworks, or MBA programs, or Six Sigma or any other approaches. More often than not, there is a noticeable lack of people who develop skills embedded in these programs are, as people skills are usually not those of the kern. How can a project or program manager to sharpen these skills because they are so important to future career success?

The late Dale Carnegie argued that the vast majority of the success is due to social skills, while only a small percentage is due to technical skills. Jack Welsh, former chairman of GE, has studied many many business schools and found that these are relatively low in the emphasis on these schools, but are very high on a list of what enables a person to succeed in practice. Technical skills in general able to get someone into a job and a level of competence to show, whereas people in general to promote competence and help someone at a higher level to take in an organization.

Indeed, most of these types of programs to emphasize techniques and concepts that are excellent for doing analysis, but limited use in helping people from day to day working on people issues. Furthermore you will develop a number of important contacts that can help you in your career in a very personal way.

3. At work, do not worry about what techniques you use. Bring the best you can. However, above all, seize the moment to open and close personal relationship with those you deal with construction. Find a reputation of integrity – to obtain credible, fair and transparent, so people will trust you professionally and personally.

4. Read books, take online courses, seminars, classroom courses to attend, listen to podcasts, and all you can do to learn more skills. As you do this, choose something new and appropriate for each day to apply at work and in your daily activities. This process of continuous improvement will soon accumulate and you’ll increase your confidence in dealing with people who have communication problems, and others will notice it in you.

A new focus – priority number one – should be placed on social skills. We need the fact that these are key, and practice what we believe recognition. Wile people skills are considered important implication of success on the track, they are more often than not emphasized in training and certifications. As professionals, the most vital thing to do is take the initiative and deal with people skills as a core management issue. This can be achieved by a special effort every day to become aware of those problems, the best actions we can take to learn form our experiences. People skills are something we must “own”.
